Don’t Quit Your Daydream
Hey friend,
A year ago, almost to the day, I attended a writing / journalling course as a way to improve my writing skills. While the lessons were valuable, what stayed with me the most wasn’t actually part of the curriculum. It was a framed piece on a shelf in the location the course was held, tucked away amongst a bunch of other nick-nacks, that read, “Don’t Quit Your Daydream.”
At first, I chuckled. It sounded whimsical, maybe even a little cheesy. But the more I stared at it, the more it stirred something in me. I couldn’t stop thinking about how often we let go of our dreams - those vivid, wondrous daydreams that fill our minds when we’re young.
Growing up, we’re subtly, and sometimes, not-so-subtly, taught to trade them in for something “practical.” We’re encouraged to pursue security over wonder, stability over creativity. Find a job that pays the bills, we’re told. But don’t we all have that little whispering voice inside us that says, “What if I tried? What if I didn’t let this dream go?”.
There are times I believed that my daydreams were just that - silly little fantasies meant to be entertained for a moment before I snapped back to “reality.” I’ve often been made to feel guilty for pursuing what sets my soul on fire, and opting for a less stable career. But that framed piece reminded me that dreams don’t have to be dismissed. In fact, they’re worth holding onto because they are a part of who we are.
I think we sometimes forget how important it is to believe in the impossible. Those so-called silly dreams? They’re the sparks of inspiration that keep our inner child alive, hell… they’re what make us feel alive. They’re the seeds of something bigger than we can imagine.
If you’ve ever dismissed your own dream, whether it’s to write a book, start a business, travel the world, or become an artist, ask yourself: Why not? Why not you? Why not now?
Of course, pursuing a dream isn’t always easy. There are risks, obstacles, and plenty of people who will tell you it’s not worth it. But here’s the truth:
the world needs dreamers
It needs people who believe in a better, more beautiful reality.
Dreams give us purpose. They give us hope. They remind us that life isn’t just about survival, it’s about creating, connecting, and finding joy in the process.
So today, I want to encourage you to nurture that dream you’ve tucked away. Let it take up space in your mind again. Start small - sketch out a plan, set aside time to work on it, or even just daydream about it. It’s not about achieving perfection or overnight success. It’s about daring to believe in yourself and the magic of your imagination.
That framed piece didn’t just remind me to hold on to my dreams; it made me realise that my daydreams aren’t silly at all. They’re part of my purpose. And yours are too.
So, here’s my challenge for you: Don’t quit your daydream.
Give it the attention it deserves. And who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll find yourself inspiring someone else to do the same, because the truth is, the world becomes a little brighter every time someone chooses to believe in their so-called “silly” little dream.
